A conversation about design, sustainability, and where it all began
We’re thrilled to share that Coco Du Sol was recently featured in Voyage LA’s Local Stories, a publication that highlights creative founders and small businesses making an impact across Los Angeles.
In the interview, we opened up about our beginnings, our values, and how our search for natural outdoor materials led to the creation of Coco Du Sol and our coconut fiber shade sails.
Where It All Started: From design problem to sustainable solution
Coco Du Sol began as a design problem. We couldn’t find shade that felt natural, soft, and coastal without being synthetic or overly commercial. Everything available was made from plastic. We wanted something that blended with the landscape, not fought against it.
What we found was coconut fiber, a renewable material that’s been used for generations in Indonesia, where we once lived and worked.
“We weren’t trying to launch a product — we were trying to fix a problem.”

A Deeper Reflection On Design and Place
Living and designing in Indonesia changed how we viewed outdoor spaces entirely. The light, the materials, the texture of everything around us—it moved differently. When we used those sensibilities in our designs, we realized standard synthetic shade sails simply didn’t belong in that vision.
“Living in Indonesia changed how we think about materials. It taught us that shade could be artful and alive, not something harsh or manufactured.” - It just felt right - “We’ve always been drawn to materials that tell a story — that age gracefully, feel alive, and work with the landscape rather than against it.”
That moment of clarity sparked our journey to bring natural shade alternatives to the US.
What We’re Building: Sustainable outdoor shade that belongs
Our goal has never been to chase trends or scale fast. It’s about thoughtful design, working with nature, and crafting products that quietly elevate outdoor living without compromising integrity.
Through collaboration with artisan weavers, we turn discarded coconut husks into breathable, plastic-free shade sails that feel at home in coastal homes, desert landscapes, and serene gardens.
Every sail reflects what we care deeply about:
-
Materials rooted in environmental responsibility
-
Small-batch, artisan craftsmanship
-
Outdoor environments that breathe naturally
