Outdoor Durability & Performance
-
How do coconut fiber shade sails perform in wet climates with rain or high humidity?
Coconut fiber is a breathable, naturally porous material. During rain, the fibers absorb some moisture and the sail temporarily gets heavier. Once the rain stops, the open weave allows it to dry quickly. Coir has a long history of use in coastal and tropical environments.
-
Are coconut fiber shade sails durable for outdoor use?
Coconut fiber has been used for centuries in coastal and tropical environments, valued for its rugged texture and natural resilience. Each sail is designed for seasonal outdoor use, and like all natural materials, it will weather over time — softening in tone and texture in a way many customers find part of its beauty. Lifespan will vary based on climate, exposure, and installation.
-
How do they compare to synthetic shade sails?
Coconut fiber shade sails offer a thoughtful alternative to plastic or synthetic options. Crafted from 100% natural materials, they reduce environmental impact while delivering lasting outdoor performance. Unlike synthetic fabrics that may crack or degrade over time, coconut coir is naturally resilient—it resists temperature shifts and does not become brittle. Beyond durability, these sails provide a warm, textured look that complements nature. Their design-first appeal pairs beautifully with gardens, patios, and spaces seeking natural light and sculptural shade.
Materials & Craftsmanship
-
Are your shade sails handmade?
Yes. Each shade sail is loomed and handwoven, giving it a unique character. Minor variations are part of their handcrafted beauty.
-
Why choose coconut fiber over other materials?
Choosing coconut fiber means embracing design with purpose while respecting natural materials. Made from renewable coir, these sails bring sustainability, resilience, and timeless texture together in one simple solution. Coir is a naturally breathable material that sheds water quickly, weathers gracefully, and brings a warm, textured quality to outdoor spaces.
-
Are the sails chemically treated?
No. Coconut fiber is used in its natural form - no chemical treatments, coatings, or finishes.
-
Will the color of the shade sail change over time?
Yes. Like most natural materials, coconut fiber will weather slightly over time. Expect a softening of the original tone rather than a drastic change—many customers love the gentle aging that enhances the natural aesthetic.
Installation
-
How do I install my Coco Du Sol shade sail?
All Coco Du Sol shade sails have easy-to-hang grommets for attaching to a secure installation point. Please visit our installation page and refer to our guide for more information about installing shade posts. If you are unsure about the integrity of your installation point or still have questions we recommend consulting with a professional for the most secure installation that will ensure durable, lasting shade and peace of mind.
-
Can I hang my sail from a trellis or pergola?
Yes—these structures make excellent anchor points. For a more integrated solution, explore our upcoming pergola shade systems.
Safety & Maintenance
-
Are your shade sails fire retardant?
No. Our shade sails are made from 100% natural coconut fiber with no chemical treatments or fire-retardant coatings. Like most natural plant-based fibers, coconut coir is combustible and should not be installed near open flames, fire pits, grills, outdoor heaters, or any heat source. Coco Du Sol shade sails have not been tested or rated for fire resistance under any standard. Please consider the placement of heat and flame sources carefully when planning your installation.
-
Do your shade sails provide UV protection?
Our shade sails are designed to gently filter sunlight through their natural open weave, creating soft, dappled shade and a cooler feel beneath. However, because our sails are handwoven from natural coconut fiber, they have not undergone official laboratory UV testing and do not carry a certified UPF rating. They are not engineered as UV-blocking shade structures. If UV protection is a primary concern, we recommend using additional sun protection measures alongside your Coco Du Sol shade sail.
-
How do your shade sails perform in windy conditions?
Our shade sails feature a natural open weave that allows wind to pass through rather than catching it like a solid fabric, which helps reduce strain on attachment points. However, our sails have not been engineered or tested for specific wind load ratings. They are not rated for use in high winds, storms, or severe weather. We recommend taking your shade sail down in advance of storms or sustained high winds, and always securing your installation to structurally sound anchor points. We recommend consulting a professional.
-
How should I maintain my coconut fiber shade sails?
Maintenance is simple and straightforward. Rinse occasionally with fresh water to remove dust or salt buildup, especially if used by the coast. Use mild soap and a soft brush if needed. Avoid harsh chemicals and high-pressure washing as this can damage the natural oils and fibers. In snowy climates, take the sail down for winter and store it dry. Be sure to allow the sails to dry completely before storing to maintain their shape and integrity.
Customization & Fit
-
Do you offer custom sizes?
We do offer customization however, there is a minimum order requirement that is typically not practical for small residential projects so we recommend checking our Installation Guide for creative solutions for shading irregular spaces and sizing needs. -
What size should I order?
It depends on your space and the desired shade coverage. Refer to our installation guide on how to measure. Once you measure the size of your space you'll want to round down to the nearest size or you can layer multiple shade sails to cover unique spaces of all sizes and shapes.
